Information from Winifred Lilian Downer:
The family moved to Birmingham (Smethwick) about 1905.

At the age of 14, she was working nights in a munitions factory (Kynoch-Hockley?) making cartridges; later she worked at Beston Lloyds, checking tubes of some sort.

She recalled queueing as a feature of life during the first World War before ration books were introduced.

Her mother Helena Mary died early in 1915. About 1918, she moved back to London to live with her Aunt Lizzie whose husband had also died recently.

Winifred Lilian married Albert Downer.
